Assume for a population of mosquito the probability of infection
is 0.28
a) You randomly collect 147 mosquitoes and find that 14 are
infected. How many unique ways could this have happend (how many
different ways can you sample 14 out of 147)?
b) If you were to randomly collect 147 mosquitoes from this
population, what is the probability that the first 14 collected
were infected and the subsequent 133 were not?
c) If you were to randomly collect 147 mosquitoes, what is the
probability that any 8 would be infected individuals?
d) If you were to collect 147 mosquitoes, what is the
probability that you would have greater than 40 infected
individuals?
e) If you were to collect 147 mosquitoes, what is the
probability that you would have 25 to 40 infected individuals
(inclusive - that is, 25 or greater and 40 or fewer; >=25 and
<=40)?
f) You receive data from an unknown population where 16 of the
94 mosquitoes collected are infected. You know that a different
strain of bacteria infects insects with a probability of infection
of 0.13. What strand of bacteria is more likely to have infected
these mosquitoes based on the data, a strain with an infection
probability of 0.13 or an infection probability of 0.28?
