A factory producing wire mesh for fences wanted to test their mesh with respect to the key variable mesh tension. A total of 150 wire meshes were taken from the production line over 30 days (five per day). The factory manager determined that the establishment period would last for 10 days, and then monitoring would take place after. Measurements of mesh tension was taken, and the average mesh tension strength was calculated. Control charts were used to determine whether the process was stable. Once stability was confirmed, a capability analysis was conducted to determine whether the process was capable. The control charts to determine process stability is shown below. Establishment Xbar-S Chart of tension Monitoring UCL-264.36 260 250 X-25041 Sample Mean 240 LI=24% 4% 230 10 13 19 22 25 28 16 Sample 20 UCL-20.42 Sample Stev AA 5-9.77 LI=0 10 13 19 22 25 16 Sample Subgroups used for the calculations: 1-10
a) Briefly explain the difference between the Establishment period and the Monitoring period. What specific tasks in control charting are performed during each period? b) Referring to the control charts above, are there any actions you would take during the establishment and monitoring periods?
Assuming the process is stable, the following capability analysis was produced: Process Capability Report for tension LSL Target USL Process Data LSL 225 Target 265 USL 300 Sample Mean 249.348 Sample N 150 St Dev(Overall) 10.3026 Overall Capability Pp 1.21 PPL 0.79 PPU 1.64 Ppk 0.79 Cpm 0.62 208 224 240 256 272 288 304 320 % USL % Total Performance Observed Expected Overall 0.67 0.91 0.00 0.00 0.67 0.91 c) Describe the capability of the process based only on the histogram above (hint: refer to the shape, target process mean, and the specification limits). d) What do the capability Ratio (Pp) and the Capability Index (Ppk) tell us about the capability of the process? Which measure would you use to determine whether the process was capable or not?
