[3] Describe an experiment that you could use to prove that
hydrogen atoms contain electrons in defined and quantized energy
levels. Be sure to describe what you would observe in a successful
experiment.


1.5 mark answer: Shine light at a sample of H atoms.
You should see a line spectrum (sketch of line spectrum
included).
3 mark answer: Put some H atoms into a glass tube and supply
some energy to it. Measure the light emitted from the tube to see
if the emission spectrum is a continuous or line spectrum. If a
line spectrum is observed, then photons of quantized energies are
emitted as electrons transition from defined higher energy levels
to lower energy levels (sketch showing electron transitions
and emitted photons included).
