1. During a practical the following is synthesised: a titanosilicate using Ti (IV) n-butoxide as a Ti precursor and TEOS (tetraethyl orthosilicate) as a silica framework agent. The molar ratio of Ti: Si in this material is optimized to approximately 1:10. Explain what will happen to the catalytic activity of the titanosilicate if you change this ratio as follows: A. Increase the ratio to 5: 10 B. Decrease the ratio to 0.4: 10 In your answer, clearly indicate the following for cases A & B: I. II. In each case, would the catalytic activity increase or decrease? 4 marks Considering the chemical structure of titanosilicates, give reasons for the above. 6 marks Give at least one analytical technique that would allow you to detect the structural changes in the titanosilicates mentioned in scenarios A and B, giving key expected observations. 10 marks III.
