Nitrate (NO3-) and nitrite (NO2-) are two oxyanions of nitrogen found in several salts.
(a) Draw a Lewis structure for NO3- and for NO2- (if there are more than one resonance shape, draw only one).
(b) Assign the formal charge to each atom of these species.
Draw all the resonance shapes for NO3- and for NO2- (if there is more than one).
(C). Nitrate salts are sometimes found in explosive compounds. Using the concept of formal charge, provide an explanation that the nitrate ion is more reactive than the nitrite ion.
