2. Green Options (GO) is a supermarket chain operating in a largely rural area of the UK. Currently, there are three ways customers can shop from GO stores: in-store using a staffed check-out, in-store using an automatic check-out and online with delivery. In order to cut down customer travel and increase shelf space, the chain is considering reducing the total number of number of check-outs in each store and reducing the proportion of the remaining check-outs that are manned. The GO planning team are aware that different ways of shopping may appeal to different categories of customer. The team has therefore decided to conduct a survey of customers' preferences for shopping method offered and the reasons for these preferences. The survey results will help determine how best GO can encourage more customers to switch to newer shopping methods. a) Define the population relevant to this survey. (1 mark) The GO survey team has worked out that sufficient resources are available to collect (and analyse data from) a sample of 2000 customers. GO estimate that 97% of their customers hold loyalty cards. The survey team has decided that the best sample selection method for this survey would be stratified random sampling. b) GO will have to restrict their survey to loyalty card holders. Suggest why. (4 marks) c) The team is particularly concerned that variability among customers in terms of shopping method preferences and the reasons) is accurately represented in the sample. Other than by store, suggest how the population (loyalty card holders) could be divided up (stratified) to reflect this variability. Briefly explain the relevance (to this survey) of each customer category you choose. (6 marks) d) Outline how stratified random sampling could be conducted for the GO survey. (6 marks) e) For the GO survey, what would be the advantages of stratified random sampling and what problems may be experienced with this sample selection method? (4 marks)
