6. a) Write down Darcy's equation for the head loss due to friction in a circular pipe and define all the terms that appear in the equation. What are the main parameters that the pipe friction coefficient depends on? [2 marks] b) Oil is pumped at a rate of 2400 kg/s from a storage tank to a refinery 150 km away through a pipe of 1.25 m inner diameter. The pipe wall roughness is 0.125 mm, the density of the oil is 800 kg/m3, the dynamic viscosity of the oil is 2.44x10-3 Ns/m2, and the acceleration due to gravity, g = 9.81 m/s2. i) Calculate the volumetric flow rate of the oil. [1 mark] ii) Calculate the Reynolds number of the oil flow. [2 marks] iii) Is the flow of oil laminar or turbulent? Justify your answer. [1 mark] iv) Use the Moody diagram shown in FIGURE Q6 (on the next page) to determine the friction coefficient of the pipe. [2 marks] v) Calculate the head loss due to friction in the pipe. [2 marks]
