Unit Evaluation: Power Lab Task: Determine your power going up a staircase. Power is a measure of how much work is done in a given unit of time. You will determine the work done by walking up a flight of stairs by finding the change in gravitational potential energy from the bottom of the stairs to the top (you will need to measure the height of the stairs and your mass). Then you will measure the time it takes you to walk up the stairs. Combining the work done and time taken will give you your power. You will also be able to determine your horsepower when going up the stairs using the conversion: 1 hp = 746 W hp = horsepower WHEN THE POWER LEVH Materials: • Stairs • Stopwatch/timer • Tape measure OVER OG • Bathroom scale Safety: Be very careful when walking up stairs. Get someone else to time you if necessary and walk up the stairs at a safe pace. Procedure: 1. Measure height of one stair 5. Measure weight on bathroom scale 2. Count total number of stairs and 6. Find average time determine height of whole staircase 7. Calculate gravitational potential energy 3. Walk upstairs while timing when you are at top of staircase 4. Record time and then repeat steps 3-4 so 8. Calculate power you have at least 3 values for time 9. Calculate horsepower 2. In a table of values summarize all measurements taken (mass, time, height of staircase) and power/horsepower calculated a. Include units and quantity in the header row (top row) of your table and only indicate magnitude in subsequent rows 3. Show all calculations a. Finding height of staircase b. Gravitational potential energy at top of staircase c. Average time d. Power e. Horsepower
