Osmosis depends on the total concentration of solute particles. If a compound ionizes, the osmosis effect will be greater than the molarity would indicate. For example, 1 M Na S behaves like it's 3 M because I mole Na Sionizes to produce 2 moles Na and 1 moles, Nags → 2Na+ s since 1 mole of Na:S produces a total of 3 moles of ions, 1 M Na:S has an effective strength of 3 M.
