(7) In a study of thresholds for pain, 25 women and 25 men were randomly recruited. Participants sub- merged their non-dominant hand in room temperature water for three minutes and then immersed the same hand in 41°F water with the instruction that they should submerge their unclenched hand as long as possible up to five minutes. The data summaries for both genders are given below. Women Men Sample mean (seconds) 221 209 Standard deviation (seconds) 9 8 The Normal probability plots of the two samples suggest the two populations follow Normal distri- butions. Are women able to withstand cold longer than men? Hint: State Ho and HA. Check the assumptions for pooled t test; if satisfied, calculate test statistic, p-value (using either R to find exact p-value or t table to find closest range), and draw conclusion.
