C 4. Assume that we have four cities w, a,y and z. The four cities are locates on the corners of a square. There is an electric line which we designate by a going from w to z. Another line designated by b goes from 3 to y. Finally there is a line going from y to z denoted by c, whilst line d goes from z to w. There is a power plant outside city y which is connected with a line f to y city y and no other city. All the electricy for the four cities come from this power plant. Hence, the lines build a square and on top there is line f going from the powerplant to city y. Let A be the event that line a works, whilst B is the event that line b works. Finally let O be the event that line c works and let D be the event that line d works and F be the event that the line f works. All these lines work independently of each other. We assume that the probabilities Pa := P(A), P. := P(B), pe= P(C), Pd := P(D),p, = P(F) are all known. Let E designate the event that electricity can flow from the power plant to the city w. a) Calculate the probability that E holds and that a works at the same time in terms of pa, po Pe. Pd and pp). b) Calculate the probability that a or b work, and that E holds at the same time.
