OD 3. For a discussion of the heat capacity usually the Debye theory is used. We want to compare here the Debye theory with the classical method quantitatively. (a) Calculate the thermal energy of 1 mol of Cu at T = Op using the classical theory. (for Cu, Op = 343 K) (b) Calculate the thermal energy using the Debye theory and compare with the classical result from (a). Approximate the specific heat after Debye with a straight line according to Debye temperature CV = 3R T/OD (c) Calculate the order of magnitude of the displacement of the Cu atoms at T = Op. Compare this value with the lattice parameter of Cu. Hints: start with an expression for the potential energy of a spring. Calculate the spring constant from the dispersion relation (wmax = 4), with a a = spring constant) and assume that Wmax = @p. Өр = 4a = m = -
