You are working as a clinical nutritionist in a long-term care
facility. In reviewing the medical chart of a newly-admitted
female resident, you note that this individual has a medical dx of
Crohn’s disease and has reported a series of active flare-ups in
the past few months which she has managed by limiting food intake
to minimize gastrointestinal discomfort. In addition, you
note that this individual is 75 y/o, 65 in (165 cm) tall, usually
weighed 140 lbs (64 kg) but unintentionally lost 15 lbs. over the
past 6-7 months, so currently weighs 125 lbs (57 kg) at time of
admission to the long-term care facility.
1. Estimate this individual’s ideal body weight (IBW)
range using the Hamwi equation and assuming a medium skeletal frame
size. (Show calculation below.)
Height - 65 inch ( 5 feet 5 Inch)
Hamwi equation : Females
100 lb for 5 feet height + 5 lb for every 1 inch
So 5 feet - 100 lbs ; 5 Inch - 5 × 5 = 25 lbs
= 100 + 25
= 125 lbs (
medium frame size ) no increase or decrease.
Ideal body weight is 125 lbs
2. Calculate this individual’s % ideal body weight (% IBW)
at time of admission; interpret this calculation of % IBW using the
appropriate interpretive ranges. (Show calculation and
indicate interpretation below.)
