A steel open-ended thick-walled hydraulic cylinder is subjected to an internal pressure of 200 MPa and an external press
A steel open-ended thick-walled hydraulic cylinder is subjected to an internal pressure of 200 MPa and an external pressure of 150 MPa. The internal diameter of the cylinder is 300 mm. For steel, the Young's modulus E = 200 GPa, Poisson's ratio v = 0.3 and yielding stress Oy= 400 MPa. (1) According to the maximum shear stress theory, what is the required external diameter of the cylinder? (2) Calculate the change in inner and outer diameter of the cylinder due to the internal and external pressure. (3) Plot radial stress and hoop stress distributions through the wall thickness.
