A NC turning process will be done in two cutting passes to a drive shaft. of material steel, 42CrMo4 - AISI4140, working in a cycle that runs automatically. The operator is the one who pre-aligns the machine for the work. The initial diameter of the shaft is 8 in and its length is 25 in. The operation plan consists of the following steps: The operator loads the part into the machine, starts the cycle (1.5 min); 2. The NC lathe positions the tools for the first step (0.4 min); 3. The NC lathe machines the first step (time depends on the cutting speed); 4. The NC lathe repositions the tool for the second step (0.5 min); 5. The NC lathe machines the second step (time depends on the cutting speed); 6. The operator unloads the part and places it on the carriage (2 min). In addition, the cutting tool is a cerment material insert, and it must be changed periodically and this tool change takes 2 min. The feed rate is 0.015 in/rev and the depth of cut for each step = 0.30 in. The operator cost v machine cost = $100/hr v tool cost = $20/cutting edge. Determine; a) the cutting speed to minimize the cost per part D) the average time required to complete a production cycle c) the cost of the production cycle. If the total setup time for this job is 8 hr and the batch size is 1000 pieces how much time will be required to complete the batch?
