PROBLEM 4 (20 marks) Five workers are weighed in their undergarments (having eaten and visited the bathroom) at the start of a shift. They wear protective clothing and then work in a hot environment. After the work period, they remove the protective clothing and are welghed again, before taking a shower. The exercise is repeated over several days, varying the work period each time. The conditions in the work environment are monitored and found not to vary over time. The table below shows the weight reduction that has occurred, due to sweat loss (in kilograms) Length of Work Period in Heat (h) Worker Body Mass (kg) 0.25 0.5 0.75 1.0 1.25 1.5 1.75 2.0 70 65 60 80 1.00 0.55 0.60 1.75 1.35 1.50 0.30 0.10 0.20 0.10 0.10 0.20 0.43 0.74 0.30 0.40 0.30 0.20 0.40 1.05 0.46 0.66 0.38 0.24 85 90 1.30 0.75 0.80 1.00 0.60 0.70 1.85 1.15 1.33 1.25 0.71 1.70 1.70 2.00 3.00 1.40 1.60 0.60 0.40 0.50 1.43 0.85 1.50 1.00 1.20 1.50 0.80 1.0 2.14 1.54 2.00 1.88 0.94 95 2.42 1.70 2.50 2.80 3.70 1.60 2.00 2.42 3.85 4.17 4.63 1.88 1.78 3.12 100 105 110 115 120 0.15 0.33 0.13 0.12 0.22 0.23 2.50 1.20 1.30 2.50 2.08 2.50 2.56 1.41 1.44 2.08 1.00 0.75 0.47 0.56 0.84 2.62 3.33 3.75 1.65 1.56 2.56 0.78 0.44 0.54 1.11 1.60 Mean 1.18 Refer to the discussion of sweat loss and heavy work and comment on these data. Pay particular attention to the safety and ethics of carrying out this trial. Can you recommend a maximum safe work period based on these data?
