A star-connected three-phase load is made of three identical coils each having a resistance of 12 ohms and inductance of 142 milli-Henry (mH). The power taken by this load when connected to a balanced 3-phase, three wire supply of 400 V, 50 Hz is measured by using the two wattmeters method. (a) Determine expected readings of wattmeter No.1 (WA) and wattmeter No.2 (W2) (20) (b) Calculate the total power consumed by the load (5) [25] QUESTION 2 (a) A single-phase motor connected to a 230 V, 50 Hz supply takes 8.3 A at a power factor of 0.866 lagging before connecting a capacitor bank. A capacitor bank made of two similar capacitors in parallel is now connected across the terminals of a motor to raise the power factor to unity. Draw the equivalent circuit diagram of the arrangement and determine the capacitance of each capacitor. (19) (b) How would the installation of capacitor bank in (a) above affect the magnitude of the following: i. Active component of supply current (3) ii. Reactive component of supply current (3) [25]
