ASSIGNMENT 3: UBER PULLS OUT OF CHINA The world economy has become increasingly integrated, and many businesses have extended their reach beyond national borders. Yet the process of globalization is controversial, and the involvement of corporations in other nations is not always welcome. Doing business in diverse political and economic systems and in societies with stark differences in wealth and income poses difficult challenges. When a multinational corporation buys resources, manufactures products, or sells goods and services in multiple countries, it is inevitably drawn into a web of global social and ethical issues. Understanding what these issues are and how to manage them through collaborative action with governments and civil society organizations is a vital skill for today's managers. CASE The case describes a dispute involving a multinational corporation, Uber in China. Instructors may wish to introduce the case with a short video produced by Bloomberg, "Here's Why American Tech Companies Keep Failing in China" (1:45 minutes), aired August 10, 2016. It reviews several reasons why Uber (and other internet-based companies) have failed to gain traction in China. The video is available on YouTube at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2J8h1ZBwvo. Case Questions Corporate involvement abroad often involves challenging social, ethical, and environmental issues. What were the issues faced by Uber in China? Who were their global stakeholders, and how were these stakeholders affected positively and negatively - by the company's actions?
