Question 4 The synthesis of the macrocyclic pincer ligand L and a number of its rhodium complexes was recently reported; details of the synthesis are outlined below. Bu Bu Bu вна catalyst Y BH3 BH3 catalyst Z reagents? BH3 BH3 BH3 Bú Bu Bú B (mixture of cis and trans alkenes) EtNH Bu 'Bu Bu CO N-R-CO N-RO- Bú Bú Bu X X D с (a) Suggest homogeneous organometallic catalysts Y and Z that can accomplish the transformations shown in the scheme above, as well as any additional reagents required in the second step (A → B). [3 marks] (b) Give specific reasons, consistent with your answer to (a) above, why the phosphine groups were protected as the borane adducts throughout the synthesis of L. [2 mark] (c) The 13C{H} NMR spectrum of complex D [(L)Rh(CO)]X contains a doublet of triplets at 194.7 ppm (J = 70 Hz, 13 Hz). Account for this observation, and predict the appearance of the 31P{H} NMR of this complex. X-is a non-coordinating anion, and can be ignored. [5 marks]
