Problem 2.5: Effect of Gravity on Time Dilation Three observers are at rest at the bottom of a cliff, each with a clock. To begin with, the clocks are synchronized. Observer A remains at rest at the bottom of the cliff. Part (a): Observer B climbs up the cliff to the top with the clock and then climbs back down, moving at the same constant speed V is both directions. The time elapsed, as measured by the stationary observer A, is to. What is the time elapsed on B's clock? Part (b): The third observer C uses a cannon to shoot C's clock straight up, with just the right initial speed that it gets to the height of the top of the cliff, and then falls back down. According to the stationary observer's clock, C's clock takes the same time to to go up and fall back down on the ground as B's. What is the time elapsed according to C's clock? Part (c): Which clock measures the longest time? Why? Include the gravitational effects on clocks but keep the special relativistic time-dilation effect only through terms of order v2/c2. In part (b) neglect air resistance.
