- For a bolted assembly with six bolts, the stiffness of each bolt is ky 2 Mlbf/in and the stiffness of the members is km = 10 Mlbf/in per bolt. An external load of 100 kips is applied to the entire joint Assume the load is equally distributed to all the bolts. It has been determined to use 0.5 in- 13 UNC grade 8 bolts with rolled threads. Assume the bolts are preloaded to 75 percent of the proof load. . (a) Determine the likely mode of failure of the bolt under static loading conditions. (b) What design changes would you recommended to avoid static failure in (a)? It is not feasible to lower the external load. (c) Determine the Torque necessary to produce the desired preload Fi. Use the torque coefficient value of K = 0.2.
