Worksheet 5. Kinetics of circular motion 1. A person is flying a model airplane with mass 82.2 gram in a horizontal circular path on the end of a string 10.5 m long. The string is horizontal and exerts a force of 3.22 N on the hand of the person holding it. What is the speed (in m/s) of the plane? 2. Tarzan (m = 78.4 kg) tries to cross a river by swinging from a vine. The vine is 10 m long. Tarzan doesn't know that the vine has a breaking strength of 1045 N. What maximum speed (in m/s) can Tarzan have at the bottom of the swing (as he just clears the water) in order to safely cross the river without breaking the vine? 3. An airplane is flying in a horizontal circle at a speed of 117 m/s. The pilot does not want his centrifugal acceleration to exceed 6.8g (that is, to be more than 6.8 times the acceleration of gravity). What is the minimum radius (in meters) of the circular path? 4. A body moves with simple harmonic motion of amplitude 300 mm and period 0.75 sec. Determine the maximum velocity and acceleration 5. A body moving with simple harmonic motion of amplitude 120 mm has an acceleration of 12 m/sec? when 80 mm from the equilibrium position. Determine: a) Frequency b) Period c) Velocity at the 80 mm position.
