Question (3): (18 marks) Water is transported through a 600 m long horizontal cast-iron pipe of 0.12 m in diameter. It is given that the total head loss in the cast-iron pipe is 10 m. Take p = 1,000 kg/mp and v= 1 x 10-6 m²/s. Roughness of the pipe can be found from the Moody Chart (Fig. 15 or 16) in Chapter 7 of the lecture notes. (a) Determine the flow rate through the pipe in m3/s (by using the “Moody Chart Calculator' on the website https://www.advdelphisys.com/michael maley/moody chart/) (b) Calculate the power required to overcome the total head loss and to maintain that particular flow rate. Assumption: (1) The flow is steady and incompressible. (2) The entrance effects are negligible, and thus the flow is fully developed. (3) The pipe section involves no work devices such as a pump or a turbine. Note that the App ‘Moody Chart Calculator solves the Colebrook equation by using numerical technique. The input data are Reynolds number Re and the relative roughness ε/D, surface roughness/diameter of the pipe. The output is the friction factor f.
